Intermittent connectivity problems across subnets are among the most frustrating issues in production environments. Begin by collecting packet captures at both ends of the failing path using tools like tcpdump or Wireshark. Check for asymmetric routing, duplicate IP addresses, or MAC address table inconsistencies on switches. Review firewall logs for session timeouts or connection state table overflows. Examine spanning tree topology for flapping links that cause temporary forwarding loops. Verify MTU settings end to end, especially across VPN tunnels or overlay networks. Use continuous ping or path monitoring to correlate outages with specific time windows. Document the topology and every change you make so the next engineer can pick up where you left off.
